Cars to Watch: RM Sotheby’s Monterey 2018

Lease from RM Sotheby's Monterey auction

RM Sotheby’s Monterey Auction

RM Sotheby’s is a giant among collector car auctions. For over 30 years, they’ve been saving their best for Monterey, honoring the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance with a docket of worthy motors. 175 cars, spanning the entire history of the automobile, will pass under the gavel at the Monterey Conference Center.  RM Sotheby’s is an arbiter of automotive quality, selling the cars that matter and setting the estimates that make waves in the collector car market. Their in-house restoration team has won six Best of Show honors at Pebble Beach.

Premier’s Team of leasing experts will be watching the bidding closely to glean what they can about the future of the market. Here are a few of their favorite consignments.

1990 Ferrari F40

Lease a red Ferrari F40

Michelle Yancey, our Southwest Sales Manager, has her eye on the 1990 Ferrari F40 at Lot 226. Made in honor of Ferrari‘s 4oth anniversary, the F40 was a self-portrait – the last car approved by Enzo himself, and a four-wheeled symbol of Ferrari’s values. It comes as no surprise that it was the fastest car of its day, with a twin-turbocharged V8 that made it the first road car to break 200mph. The F40 was made to go fast, no compromise was made for comfort; it had no carpet, nor power windows, and a mere cord was the only means of egress.

1959 Bentley S1 Continental “Flying Spur”

Lease a Bentley Flying Spur

Chris Warren, our Sales Manager for the Southeast, is a fan of the 1959 Bentley S1 Continental. By the 50s, Bentley had turned to making its S1 with “Standard Steel” bodies built in-house. The Continental, however, was still available with custom coachwork. One of the most popular designs was dubbed the “Flying Spur” and produced by the legendary H.J. Mulliner. The Continental also benefited from an uprated six-cylinder that was optimized for high-speed touring. Lot 233‘s Flying Spur has enjoyed a careful restoration by marque experts.

1956 Austin-Healey 100-4 BN2

Lease a black Austin-Healey 100-4

An icon of British motoring, Lot 274‘s Austin-Healey 100-4 has caught the eye of Northeast Sales Manager, Keith Neelans. The Austin-Healey 100-4 is a pure roadster with sharp handling and a peppy inline four producing 90hp and 150 lb-fts. The BN2 improved on this with a four-speed with overdrive and a revised rear-axle ratio. This example has just undergone a complete restoration.

1960 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet

Lease a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT

West Coast Sales Manager, Juan Garcia, is favoring the 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet at Lot 220. The 250 GT Cabriolet straddled the line between performance and luxury. While the roadster had Ferrari’s latest iteration of the Columbo v12, a stylish and lavishly appointed interior made it a pleasure to drive on long tours. An open-topped body by Pinin Farina assured it didn’t suffer in the looks department, either. This particular Cabriolet was once owned by a CEO of Coca-Cola.

1965 Aston Martin DB5

Lease a silver Aston Martin DB5

Kyle Lane, Premier’s Midwest Sales Manager, is watching the 1965 Aston Martin DB5 offered at Lot 138. Known today as a movie star more than a car, the DB5 was once considered a premier 2+2 grand tourer. It was hand-built, with seats of Connolly leather and ultra-light Superleggera bodywork.  Three SU carburetors fed a straight-six capable of propelling the car to 145mph. The DB5 is a car worthy of 007, no acting required.

1962 Maserati 5000 GT

Lot 227‘s 1962 Maserati 5000 GT is a favorite at Premier’s corporate headquarters in Woodbury, Connecticut. The 3500 GT put Maserati back on the map as a manufacturer of glamorous touring cars. It garnered so much attention that the Shah of Iran requested his own, but with the V8 from the 450s racecar in place of the 3500’s inline six.  With set of disk brakes and a little fettling to tame the racing engine, the 5000 GT was born. Only 34 were produced, this one was bodied by Allemano.
