Remember the tune from the Broadway Musical Annie “The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow”? Everybody was singing this song as we arrived at Amelia Island on Thursday to a cold and windy rain storm. Fortunately, the weather made a miraculous turnaround in time for the weekend.
Thursday is preview day for both RM Auctions and Gooding & Company. Advisors and bidders are strategizing while trying to separate prudence from sheer desire. The auctions, Friday (Gooding & Co.) and Saturday (RM), proved themselves once again as spectacles for the viewing public with voracious sale rates. Amongst the high prices were many more moderately priced collectables. There really was something for most budgets.
The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance has been growing every year and with record crowds, it may soon need to take over another fairway. Sunday was a glorious day and the field was full of spectators, at times ten rows deep. Manufacturers’ podiums were full as they celebrated both their new and vintage offerings. This year we saw honors to McLaren, Maserati, and Offenhauser. The Sunday show is great theatre of wonderful ceremony, class, and competition with an incredible variety on display.
Amelia Island affords many other distractions for family members with unique shopping, eclectic restaurants, and miles of beaches to explore. Friday and Saturday are filled with plenty of periphery events including art exhibits, rallies, and cocktail receptions. This event is certainly a worthy bucket list weekend for any automotive enthusiast.
