Cars to Watch: Gooding & Company Pebble Beach

Gooding & Company’s 2016 Pebble Beach Auction

As the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the most distinguished automotive event in the world, Gooding & Company has quite a bit to live up to. A docket brimming with over 100 pristine examples of the most collectible cars extant ensures that these expectations will be met. A couple Ferrari Dino 246 GTs, a Toyota 2000 GT, and a Maserati Ghibli Spider are just a handful of the auction’s standouts. Our team of leasing experts will be in attendance at this historic sale. All keeping an eye out for the cars below.

The 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing” on offer at Gooding & Company’s Pebble Beach sale has caught the eye of our Southwest Sales Manager, Michelle Yancey. The 300 SL needs no introduction; it’s an incredibly desirable collectible car thanks to its looks, luxury, and performance. Additionally, with a record of steady appreciation that makes it an ideal investment. Further, the 300 SL’s lightweight aluminum chassis necessitated the iconic “gullwing” doors. They allowed the coupe to reach an astonishing 160 mph.

Keith Neelans, Premier’s in-house Porschephile and Northeast Sales Manager, is watching the 1988 Porsche 959. The 959 was a twin-turbocharged flat-six supercar designed to qualify for the notorious Group B. The 959 is the fastest production automobile of its day. It showed the world the extreme performance the German marque was capable of and setting a precedent for the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder. Lastly, don’t worry, the “komfort” designation doesn’t mean it’s soft – it merely distinguishes the street-legal road car from the “sport” racecar.

Juan Garcia, Premier’s West Coast Sales Manager, has chosen the 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider. This is after finding himself behind the wheel of a similar model on the Colorado Grand. The Giulietta Spider of the 1950s is Alfa Romeo’s seminal post-war roadster. In addition, it combines an understated Pininfarina-designed body with Alfa’s lengthy racing pedigree. Spiders of this era are increasingly collectible and ideal for vintage rallies, as our CEO Mitch Katz can attest to.

Our Southeast Sales Manager Chris Warren covets the 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT consigned to Gooding for Pebble Beach. The Giulia series of Alfa Romeo coupes and sedans were the successors of the nimble Giuliettas of the 50s and early 60s. Further, with spirited performance and Italian styling, the Giulia reinforced Alfa Romeo’s reputation as a car manufacturer for the sporty consumer. Additionally, the Giulia Sprint GT was the first sport-specific model of the Giulia line. It offers a larger engine and minimalist interior that made it as ideal for racing as it was for a trip to the market.

Premier Financial Services’ home office in Woodbury, Connecticut eagerly awaits the bidding on the red 1971 Lamborghini Miura P400 SV. By ’71, these Lamborghinis lost their louvered “eyelashes.” However, a host of improvements, made them far more livable cars. This includes separate oil sumps for the engine and transmission. The Miura represents a turning point for the Italian marque. Turning away from elegant grand tourers towards the ostentatious supercars they build today. Besides its mid-engined layout and iconic styling, the Miura will always be remembered as the beginning of Lamborghini’s bull-themed emblem and naming conventions.
